Spud Sunday: Snakes And Spuds

potato snake skin pendant

Meet my latest spud acquisition:
a pendant made from dried potato and shed snake skin,
as fashioned by the very lovely Earth Apple Jane
(Jane lives in New South Wales, which is where she found the shed skin of a red-bellied black snake – something I’m kinda glad to say we don’t have in Ireland)

Spuds. When I’m not eating them, I’m wearing them. Sometimes I even do both at the same time.

Did they know that?

No, but it wouldn’t have surprised them. Not one little bit.

Not the possession of a snake skin and potato pendant, nor the library of potato books, not the mr. and mrs. potato head, nor the glass potato (exhibit b., below), nor any of the assorted items of a spud nature – along with real, actual spuds – that I call my own.

Spud Sunday: Of Hummus, Fries And Food Bloggers

Not that it’s entirely relevant, but the curry in question was a tandoori king prawn masala, and (cue licking of lips) very nice it was too.

The players:

In addition to yours truly, we have Bethany and Mayssam, 2 ladies with Lebanese backgrounds and, I suspect, a vast amount of hummus-eating experience. This fact is significant.

The background:

It was 24 hours since the massed participants at Food Blogger Connect 2010 had descended on the Hempel Hotel.

24 hours with much discussion of bloggery. From the how-do-I-make-money-at-this talk with Jaden to the craft of writing as discussed by Jeanne, Jamie and Kerrin and the low-down on cameras, photography and styling with Hilda, Meeta and Mowie.

24 hours of eating, drinking and making sure you scored a bowl of posh-looking fish, chips and mushy peas whenever they passed your way. And no little discussion of whether that dessert was crème brulée, as advertised, or, in fact, panna cotta. Be in no doubt, this was a group of people who liked to eat and talk about food. A lot.

It was inevitable, therefore, that the conversation following that Saturday evening’s curry would involve yet more food…

Spud Sunday: Strawberry Elephants Forever

It was a sign.

A large, elephant-shaped sign.

Painted with some mighty inescapable strawberries.

Strawberry Elephant

Let me guess, you've never seen a strawberry elephant before either...

The elephant was a resident of The Hempel Hotel in London, the venue for this weekend’s Food Blogger Connect 2010 (and, yes, I will be reporting on the bits of FBC that involved neither elephants nor strawberries in due course).

I think maybe the folks at Bord Bia had placed Mr. Elephant there as a not-so-subtle reminder to me that it was the start of Irish National Strawberry week. Like I needed a reminder.
