Spud Sunday: When Potato Met Apple

If potatoes are my father, then apples are my mother.

And no, smarty pants, that does not mean that I am some misbegotten product of genetic engineering (the papple? the aptato?), I mean that there is no food I associate more with my Da than boiled potatoes and no greater sweetness than the Mammy’s apple tart or crumble.

Separate and individual, vegetable and fruit, they can, like parents, be happy cohabitants. Think potato pancakes and apple sauce.

Actually, I must confess that, in real life, these pancakes are actually quite small.

This, however, is not real life, but bloggerland Wonderland, where these are giants among pancakes. Pancakes that, in true Alice-in-Wonderland style, say eat me. Well, make me first, then eat me. I, for one, am not going to argue with a giant pancake.

Spud Sunday: Au Gratin, Au Guinness

I’ll wager that my Da would think the following a waste of perfectly good Guinness. Nevertheless, in honour of the awards weekend that was in it, I thought that Le Spud could do worse than to take a dip in some of Arthur Guinness’s finest stout.

At first blush, it might not seem that spuds doused in Guinness would be that promising a combination. It might even sound like a messy night at the blog awards pub. Just so we’re clear, though. I’m not talking about spilling your pint over somebody’s bag of tayto (though, no doubt, that happens quite a lot in this country…). What I’m talking about is Richard Olney’s recipe for Potatoes in Beer, which brings a whole new meaning to the term beer soakage.
