...there's both eatin' and drinkin' in it

Bah, Humbug

If there’s one thing worse for a food blogger than having a dodgy stomach, then it’s having a dodgy stomach 3 days before Christmas.

Instead of indulging in bucketloads of hot port and mince pies, as would be customary at this time of year, yesterday I was confined to tea and toast. Today, feeling better but still a bit cautious, I made some plain-ish crackers, just with flour, a little butter and milk, and sprinkled, some with salt and some with poppy seeds. Now, my experience with crackers is mixed and today was no different, but these, at least, had the twin virtues of looking festive and being easy on the innards. Meanwhile, I am sincerely hoping that my digestive capacities will be back to full strength in time for the feasting to come!

  1. Oh dear! That is the worst. Hope you are on the mend and that your stomach pulls it together for Christmas feasting.

  2. These crackers are lovely, though I suppose that is no consolation for your affliction. Feel well fast. I am off to Panama tomorrow, so I’ll catch up here in 10 days or so. GREG

  3. Oh no……get well….QUICK. You can’t miss all the eating action. Lovely looking trees

  4. I’m so sorry to hear you’re under the weather and hope you’ll soon be ready to partake of some serious Christmas cheer. The crackers look like a lovely step in the right direction.

  5. These look great! Proper Christmas Crackers! (I hate the paper sort, they’ve always seemed pointless to me, probably because I cannot eat them)

  6. Oh no, Spud! I’m sending you magic healing vibes and hoping you’ll be fit for the feasts tomorrow and Friday!!! The crackers are lovely and so festive. Merry Christmas!

  7. Bah Humbug is right! I got one for you – how about cracking a tooth on a foreign (and hard) object lurking inside an innocent piece of panettone bread? This happened to me today (and all the local dentists are closed till after the holiday). Well enough about me…you’ve still got 2 more days to get back into fighting shape. I know you can do it. I always find that rice helps to bind an upset tummy. Hope you feel better soon and Merry Christmas :)
ps. those are some beautiful crackers!

  8. oh no!! I hope you’ll be back to 100% when Christmas arrives. We wouldn’t want to you miss out on the days feast. Take it easy.

Those tree crackers are a good way to keep you in the Christmas spirit.

  9. I hope you feel better and all fine by tomorrow so you can enjoy the holidays. Merry Christmas and happy upcoming New Year!

  10. That’s horribly unfair! Best wishes for a speedy recovery in time for Christmas.

  11. Phoo-D: thanks – things are certainly moving in the right direction, still being a bit cautious but hoping that I’ll be fighting fit by tomorrow

sippitysup: They’re a small consolation perhaps, but I’m working on the general feeling well side of things and getting there. Have a blast in Panama and good luck with your cooking demos – will see you back around here (and, who knows, maybe in person again) in 2010.

Kitchen Butterfly: too damn right I can’t miss the eating action – that’s just not right!

Oyster Culture: oh I sincerely hope to partake in some serious Christmas cheer myself :)

Sarah: I’m none too bothered by the paper crackers either, though if they came in an edible version, I’d sit up and take notice, dodgy tummy or no!

Diva: Thanks for the healing vibes, I think they’re doing the trick :) And of course a great big Merry Christmas to you too.

Phyllis: Ouch! I hope your cracked tooth won’t put too much of a dampener on your Christmas eating – meanwhile I am working up to full eating speed here :)

jenn: I think I’ll be 100% or close to by Christmas day, fingers etc. crossed

Natasha: Me too! Hope you have a wonderful holiday and great new year too.

Kristin: Aw thank you – things are improving (I’ve worked up to soup now!) and am very hopeful that my appetite will be fully restored by tomorrow.

  12. Oh no, stomach sickness is the worst. Hope you are feeling back to usual in no time. And those crackers look amazing!

  13. Definitely not the time to get sick. :/ That’s too bad. Hoping you’re feeling better now! Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

  14. Sorry to hear that. Hope you feel better now. These crackers look so cute.

Wish you a wonderful and healthy year!

  15. Sounds like we have yet another thing in common… I got ill last week Tuesday, and still have a doggy stomach! Did not even get to enjoy Christmas, just helping serve, remove, cook once, serve, remove, bed…

Okay now whats with the ‘anorexia’ for word verification?

Duo Dishes: yep, feeling better now and glad to report that a goodly amount of Christmas eating has been done too :)

zerrin: …and the same to you :) Feeling better now and planning to continue that way!

Chef E: Oh no, it’s such crap timing, isn’t it! Hope that you feel better soon and, as for the anorexia, that word verification is definitely on the wrong blog :D

  17. Catching up in reverse, I’m pleased to know that you recovered in time for some Christmas feasting!
